Abstract
Cheese and the Netherlands are often mentioned in the same breath. Moreover, cheese and the Netherlands are associated with a nostalgic idealization of the countryside. This book seeks the reality behind the myth of 'cheese as typical for the Netherlands'. The result shows a colourful palette in which cheese and everything that has to do with cheese is placed on the study table. The authors take you to cowsheds and ultra-right-wing social media, to cheese letters, early modern diplomacy and emigration literature, to cow breeds, cow language, Texel green cheese and eighteenth-century poetry about the profits from fat dairy cows, to art about cheese and the pronunciation of cheese, to the (consonants) that a cow pronounces, to racial theories about white milk ... A history of cheese making, of all the words for cheese that Dutch has known and an analysis of the cow in Dutch agricultural policy cannot be missed. How does cheese make Netherlands? Leonie Cornips, Marieke Hendriksen and Geertje Mak gathered a group of authors, each of whom sought out the answer to this question from their own discipline such as ethnography, agrarian history and human-animal studies, linguistics, gender studies, colonial history, modern art, literary and religious studies, etc.
