Abstract
The Palace in the 19th Century. Few of this year's half-million or so visitors to Hampton Court Palace will realise, as they cross the moat bridge and talk under the Great Gatehouse, that they have just entered England's most famous Tudor building through what is almost entirely a Victorian conceit.
Hampton Court, in common with the other ancient royal residences of England, the Tower of London and Windsor Castle, appeared until 150 years ago to be largely a Georgian building. Sash windows and stock brick chimneys were almost universal. Battlements had been taken down and replaced with brick parapets; indeed, the majority of its medieval detailing had been covered up or stripped away.
